Sleep dentistry : ウィキペディア英語版 | Sleep dentistry Sleep dentistry is a medical process of putting a patient in a sleepy state during a dental treatment process with the view of avoiding dental phobia as well as the pains associated with the entire process. Sleep dentistry is now used to help address dental anxiety experienced by many patients. But contrary to its name, sleep dentistry won't actually put patients to sleep. It only makes use of sedatives and pain relievers to put patients into a relaxed or sleep-like state.〔 Actually, “sleep dentistry” is viewed by some dental professionals as a new buzz word in the world of dentistry which serves as an easily spoken acronym for “Sedation dentistry”. Some others see “sleep dentistry” as a misleading term since the patient does not actually sleep during the procedure but the effects generated by the sedative medicine may make the person sleepy. In any case, both “sleep dentistry” and “sedation dentistry” can be used interchangeably since they actually imply the same meaning in dental niche. ==Reason for sleep dentistry== The major reason for sleep dentistry is to eliminate the phobia most dental patients have when they want to undergo dental treatment. The process is also designed to help patients receive safe and anxiety-free dental care without experiencing the pains that come with the treatment processes.〔 According to the American Dental Association, about 45 million people in the U.S. have dental phobia when it comes to seeing a dentist.〔 Similarly, the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) maintains that 30 percent of the population avoids the dentist due to fear. "Dental phobia" prevents people from receiving necessary routine dental care. Hence with the use of sleep dentistry, such patients can now go for dental treatment without worries.〔
